Young Santo (Sam) Giunta, only nine years old when he arrived in Australia, was quick to embody these values. By age 11, he held his first job as a paperboy. At 14, he left school and took on a range of jobs, including photographer’s assistant, bellboy, drinks waiter at Gulu’s Restaurant in Rose Bay, carpenter, and market vendor, often beginning work as early as 4 a.m. This early experience fostered Sam’s tireless work ethic and adaptability, qualities that later propelled his journey in the tile business.
At seventeen, Sam began as a tiling apprentice and quickly moved up the ranks to become a tiler, supervisor, salesman, and ultimately a visionary tile merchant. In 1969, he established Classic Tiles Pty Ltd, setting his ambitious vision for the ceramic tile industry into motion. This vision expanded in 1972 with the founding of Classic Ceramics Importers Pty Ltd (CCI), one of Australia’s first companies dedicated exclusively to importing and distributing Italian ceramic tiles.

In 1971, Sam took his first trip to Italy’s renowned Cersaie Tile Fair—a tradition he has maintained every year since. Inspired by his experiences, he founded Classic Ceramics Importers Pty Ltd (CCI) in Leichhardt, Sydney, in 1972, focusing exclusively on the importation and distribution of Italian ceramic tiles. Despite an ambivalent market response, Sam’s passion and unconventional marketing strategies, which included cross-country trips to showcase tiles, soon reshaped Australian attitudes toward Italian ceramics. By 1978, Classic Ceramics had established itself as a premier importer and distributor of high-quality Italian and European tiles, with a rapidly expanding footprint across multiple states.
Throughout the 1980s and ‘90s, Classic Ceramics revolutionised the tile retail experience, establishing showrooms, offices, and warehouses in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, as well as distributor partnerships nationwide. This era marked the shift from the traditional “tile shop” to the innovative “tile showroom” concept, culminating in the “tile design studio” that defined the brand’s presence in the 1990s and beyond. Sam’s dedication to creating immersive showrooms, with design input from top architects and Italian designers, set new standards and inspired a new design identity for the industry.
A cornerstone of Classic Ceramics’ success is its foresight in identifying and shaping future trends. Decades-long partnerships with leading manufacturers and a commitment to listening to customer needs have kept Classic Ceramics consistently ahead of the competition. In 1997, Sam Giunta’s dedication to the tile industry earned Classic Ceramics the prestigious Assopiastrelle Award, making him the first non-European distributor—and still the only Australian—to receive this honor. Over 50 years of continuous support and attendance at the Cersaie Ceramic Tile Fair were recognized in 2022 when Sam was awarded the Loyalty award “Fedeltà” for his unwavering commitment.
The Italian Chamber of Commerce in Australia also celebrated Sam with the ‘Pioneer Award’ during the Cersaie trade fair in Bologna, honoring his lasting contribution to the Italian ceramics industry. Today, Classic Ceramics stands as one of Australia’s leading importers of fine ceramic tiles and natural stone from Europe and beyond.
